Tzedek Isaiah: Our Freedom to Vote and Racial Justice Campaigns
On July 28, Jewish leaders across Maryland organized a meeting with the staff of Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin to lobby in support of the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This was part of an effort to meet with our senators nationwide as part of a campaign led by the Religious Action Center (RAC) of Reform Judaism. In Maryland, over 150 leaders from across 20 Jewish congregations participated in this event, including 33 from Temple Isaiah (organized by Sue Tafler and our Tzedek Isaiah team). We believe we significantly impressed our senators with our passion to ensure that voting rights of Americans are not imperiled. Temple Isaiah had a lead role in making this happen and we thank our two (out of six) speakers from the event (Barbara Eldridge and Chuck Koplik). Next steps promoted by the RAC include:
- Join the “March On For Voting Rights” in Washington DC, August 28 (organized by March On and co-sponsored by the URJ/RAC and a raft of other organizations)
- Write your Senators in support of S. 1
- Write your Senators in support of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
