Get Involved

The Care Committee of Temple Isaiah assists members in times of need. During the year, the members of the Care Committee perform various mitzvot by helping to prepare meals for those who are unable to help themselves, provide rides for needed appointments, and doing other good deeds whenever possible.
We also send cards to individuals and make phone calls as well; all members are encouraged to take care with whatever time commitment they can afford and fulfill the mitzvah of caring for their neighbors.

Nourish our neighbors! The warmth of a hot meal on a cold day can provide comfort to those without a home. Our involvement with Cold Weather Shelter every year affords us the opportunity to give back to our community in a truly significant way. We provide three meals a day to at least 70 individuals during our Cold Weather Shelter week, so there are MANY opportunities to get involved.

Temple Isaiah also provides a meal for approximately 120 homeless people on the second Wednesday of each month at the Grassroots Day Resource Center in Elkridge.

DreamBuilders is an all-volunteer interfaith community of teens and adults building and repairing homes for those in need. Since 2005, Temple Isaiah has partnered with area churches to build homes locally, nationally, and internationally on summer trips and throughout the year. Visit www.dreambuildersmd.org.

Food on the 15th collects healthy, non-perishable foods (e.g., tuna/chicken packed in water, fruit in juice, soups, canned veggies, plain rice), and delivers it to low-income older adults at Morning Park Apartments in Jessup, MD each month. Food collection boxes are available in Temple Isaiah’s lobby outside of the Sanctuary. We hope you will donate non-perishable food items whenever you are able to do so. Please, no glass or styrofoam. If you would like to become a monthly sponsor, you can sign up here. There is no minimum age to volunteer — it’s a perfect family-friendly mitzvah opportunity!

Temple Isaiah members help the Grassroots Day Resource Center on the 2nd Wednesday of the month to help feed those less fortunate in our community. Non-perishable food (including paper goods and other items) may be dropped off at the Temple Isaiah office during normal business hours. Perishable items (including prepared meals and anything that needs refrigeration) can be dropped off at the synagogue Sunday–Tuesday before our service day. Please place items in the refrigerator in the kitchen off the Sanctuary.

As we celebrate our most sacred holy days, we also think of others. Temple Isaiah members take home empty bags on Rosh Hashanah and bring them back on Yom Kippur, full of food to donate. Each year, hundreds of bags are collected and taken to the food pantry at Elizabeth House.

Did you know that our gift shop, Isaiah’s Gifts, is completely volunteer run? We are generally open two Wednesdays and two Sundays a month, but we need volunteers to help staff the shop. Contact Robyn to find out how you can get involved.

Knitzvah is a volunteer organization that makes hats and scarves for underserved populations. We knit for Grassroots, local Middle schools, and UMBC, which has a high population of needy students. We will also be collecting knit hats and balaclavas (helmet/ski mask) for IDF soldiers; last year’s collection was a huge success, and we were able to send 570 hats! Knitzvah welcomes participants in any and all capacities. We are happy to teach, and we have plenty of yarn, needles, looms, and crochet hooks for anyone who wants to learn.

The TIPS Parent Association was formed to support the schooland build community. It is comprised of parents who have volunteered to organize and run family programs, enhance school programming, and support the teachers and administration. They also do mitzvah projects to help the school give back to the greater community. Everyone involved with TIPS, including our TIPS for Tots students, are invited to all PA events and programs.
